Teaching About Native Americans: Issues, Resources and Inspiration

Teaching about Native Americans is an enriching experience which requires careful thought and preparation. Stories, activities and lots of time for questions and discussion are used to explore such topics as:

  • Stories and myths as teaching tools

  • The importance of accuracy and authenticity of information on Native Americans

  • Concepts of land ownership, rights and treaties

  • Prejudice and stereotyping

  • The roles of men and women in specific traditional cultures

  • Native American spirituality

  • Cultural identity today and governmental recognition of Indian groups

 Several different curricula will be available for review and participants will receive an annotated bibliography of available resources for teaching about Native Americans in northern New England and beyond.
